Scarborough Downs’ President. Sharon Terry, receives Distinguished Service Award

Scarborough, Maine (January 31, 2011): Scarborough Downs President and owner, Sharon Terry, was the recipient of the 2010 Sheridan Smith Distinguished Service Award at the Maine Harness Horsemen’s Association annual awards banquet at The Calumet Club in Augusta on January 22, 2011.

The award, which has been presented every year since 1971 by the MHHA, honors an individual or individuals who display exemplary service and dedication to the harness racing industry. 

“It was an easy choice,” said Dr. Tim Powers, President of the MHHA.  “[Director] Mike Graffam nominated Sharon, and the rest of the Board unanimously agreed.”

Smith presented Mrs. Terry with the award, saying, “Scarborough Downs has been such an asset to the harness racing industry. Mrs. Terry has kept racing going, worked hard to secure our future with Biddeford…..Everything she does, she does for us [the horsemen].”  Mrs.

Cape Elizabeth Local Joins Portland Police Department Tomorrow

Christopher Kelley takes oath to protect and serve the city

PORTLAND, Maine – Tomorrow, Christopher Kelley will be sworn-in becoming the 123rd police officer on the roster with the Portland Police Department. A Cape Elizabeth native, Kelley graduated from Salve Regina University with a Bachelor’s degree in Administration of Justice. Upon returning to Maine, Kelley worked as a security officer at the Portland Museum of Art and a corrections officer with the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Department. Next week, Kelley will head to Vassalboro to attend the Maine Criminal Justice Academy.

“The decision to become a police officer is one of the best decisions I have made in my life and I am congratulate and welcome Chris to the Portland Police Department,” stated Chief Craig.

GRANTS AVAILABLE TO SUPPORT HOSPICE SERVICES IN SOUTHERN MAINE

PORTLAND - The Hospice Fund of the Maine Community Foundation seeks applications for grants to support hospice programs in southern Maine, particularly those that provide volunteer and bereavement services in Cumberland and York counties.
Preference will be given to collaborative efforts among hospice programs and other community groups that enhance training, recognition, and/or recruitment of diverse volunteers; and innovative projects that raise awareness of hospice programs and other end-of-life services.
