MTI awards $137,510 in Seed Grants to entrepreneurs and companies from Castine to Naples and Brewer to Yarmouth in latest Seed Grant round

The Maine Technology Institute (MTI) Board of Directors has awarded over $137K in 12 new Seed Grants to entrepreneurs and companies across the state to advance innovations in agriculture, aquaculture, biotechnology, composite materials technologies, environmental technologies and information technology and  to bring new products to market. This round of MTI awards leveraged nearly twice that much, over $235K of matching contributions from the award recipients.

“To obtain Seed Grant funding, applicants have to prove their idea, compete for funding and match every dollar of MTI funding with at least one dollar’s worth of other investment,” explained Betsy Biemann, President of MTI.

Dress for success Southern Maine hosts women's clothing sale

PORTLAND, ME – Filene's Basement may be gone, but great bargains on new or nearly-new women’s clothing may be found at Dress for Success Southern Maine’s annual Spring sale! The sale will take place on Saturday, April 16, 8 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at Catherine McAuley H.S., 631 Stevens Avenue in Portland.
The event is open to the public and features new and nearly-new women's clothing in all sizes, shoes, jewelry and accessories - casual, formal, and everything in between. Proceeds go towards Dress for Success Southern Maine's annual operating budget.
Donations of new or nearly-new (less than 2 years old), clean, ready-to-wear women’s clothing (from casual to dressy) for the Spring sale, are welcome. The drop off site and times are: 51 Baxter Boulevard (in the Hannaford Shopping Center parking lot location) on March 19, April 2, and April 9 from 9:00 a.m. to noon, plus April 15, 5-9:00 p.m.

Conservation Commission meetings

The Cape Elizabeth Conservation Commission, meeting as the Open Space Management Committee, is cancelling the March 22, 2011 meeting.

The Conservation Commission will meet at the Kettle Cove Dairy on Saturday, April 2nd beginning at 8:00 a.m. to walk the Great Pond Trails.

Duddy Joins DHHS Leadership Team

AUGUSTA – Maine Department of Health and Human Services Commissioner Mary Mayhew announced that Jennifer Duddy has joined the DHHS leadership team, filling the previously vacant position of Senior Director for Legislative and Public Relations.
In this capacity, Duddy will serve as a liaison to the legislature, coordinate communications and public affairs for the Department, and oversee constituent services.
A native of South Portland, Duddy most recently served as state office representative for Senator Susan Collins.  Prior to joining the Senator, she devoted most of her energy to serving Maine’s most needy while practicing public service law.
Duddy  worked at Pine Tree Legal Assistance in Bangor (1996) and served as Assistant Attorney General from 1996-99, prosecuting child support enforcement and child protection cases.
