New Full-Service Hilton Brand Hotel to Open Near Maine Mall

The landmark  hotel, known for its dual circular towers, by the Maine Mall is currently undergoing a multimillion-dollar upscale renovation. By the end of this month, it will be transformed from a Wyndham® property into the DoubleTree by Hilton™, the newest  full-service Hilton brand hotel in the state.

Owner Joe VanWhy of InnDeavor Development Corporation has a successful background in the hospitality business in Southern Maine. In the early 1990s, he renovated the Eastland Hotel in Portland, increased its occupancy offering, and redeveloped its food and beverage business. After selling the Eastland, he remained active in the local business community, as well as several local charitable organizations. He recently sold the Hampton Inn Hotel in Saco that he owned for over 11 years.

A (very) late Fall hike at Acadia

A (very) late Fall hike at Acadia

If you have ever hiked or driven to the summit of Cadillac Mountain at Acadia National Park, you are familiar with the breathtaking views -- and the crowds. One way to beat the crowds? Hike in December!

While the Park Loop Road is closed at this time of year, you can still access the South Ridge Trail which starts on Route 3, near the Blackwoods campground. The trail head is on the opposite side of the road, just a couple hundred feet from the campground entrance.

We did this hike on Sunday, December 11 and chose it specifically because, as a ridge trail, you are out in the open (and thus warmed by the sun) for most of the hike. Given the time of year, you have to expect a bit of ice, and we did encounter icy spots, but they were easy to work around. With an elevation just over 1500 feet, Cadillac is accessible to anyone who can handle a moderate hike. The ascent is fairly gradual and the trail is wide enough to walk to abreast in most places.

&
Saturday Dec. 3 from 9 a.m. - 4 p.m.
@ the Lincoln Street Center Rockland's first indie craft show...
just in time for the holiday.

This will not be the church craft fair that you went to last year...trying to decide between the wooden geese, doilies and the rayon yarn vests in red and green.

This will be the juried creatives fair of Rockland, where artists, artisans, craftspeople, and foodies can sell their wares to folks who are looking for the perfect gift for friends, family and coworkers.  Maybe for themselves, too!

We will be located in the gym of the Lincoln Street Center, 24 Lincoln Street, with over 50 booths!

Coats & Toys for Kids Day is coming up

I have the distinct privilege of producing many of the public service announcements airing on WCSH 6 and WLBZ 2.  I'm looking forward to sharing a little "behind the scenes" peek with you on projects.

Yesterday we videotaped pieces of the upcoming spot to promote Coats & Toys for Kids Day.  This year's approach?  Keith Carson meets up with 10-yr-old Luke for all the 4-1-1 on Coats & Toys for Kids Day (BTW, it's December 3rd....

Riverton Trolley Park - Another Gem of the Portland Trails System!

Riverton Trolley Park - Another Gem of the Portland Trails System!

With the unseasonably warm temperatures urging me to get outside yesterday, I used my day off to explore yet another gem of the Portland Trails system with my two Labs.  A few of my customers have told me that they enjoy romping with their dogs at Riverton Trolley Park in Portland and now I can totally understand why!  What a nice place to relax, poke around and exercise the mutts!

This park is well-maintained by the Portland Trails folks and is part of the Sebago To Sea trail system as well.  Located off Route 302 as you head toward Westbrook, parking is located at the trailhead adjacent to a ball field on your left just after you take a right off 302 onto Riverside Drive at the traffic light just past Tortilla Flat and Riverton Housing Complex.  My dogs are obedient to voice commands off-leash, but I carried their leashes in case we encountered walkers who don't love dogs.
