Giant Book Sale at Saco's Dyer Library

Giant Book Sale at Saco's Dyer Library

You’ve been waiting for this sale all year! The Dyer Library’s Giant Annual Book Sale is an amazing opportunity to stock up on reading for the summer and beyond. Thousands of titles, including rare and antique finds, will be available at bargain prices. Come early to get the best deals! All proceeds from the book sale benefit the Dyer Library and Saco Museum. The sale begins on Saturday, July 28 and goes through Tuesday, August 7, during regular library hours.

Work on this year’s Giant Annual Book Sale began as soon as last year’s was over. Throughout the year, people generously donate books for the sale and volunteers work hard to organize the books by topic. In the days immediately before the sale, volunteers and staff haul the books down from the second floor into the Deering wing to set-up for the sale.

South Portland Public Library considering nearby property

South Portland Public Library considering nearby property

From Kevin Davis, Director of South Portland Public Library:

"Looking for feedback: what do you think about the library exploring the idea of acquiring the old gas station property that sits at the corner of Highland Ave & Cottage Rd and converting it into nice public green space - a continuation of the library's lawn?

We see a huge upside for the library, in terms of visibility, but are mainly in love with the idea of turning a plot of land that has been industrial for many years into a more pleasant public space for the community.

Possibilities that have already been floated:

  • Clearing the land and making a park-like space, with new walkways leading to the library.
  • Using a portion of the property to 'soften' the turn onto Highland from Cottage. Adding a library/community information sign (think the Mill Creek information sign).

The best of Maine from across the creative spectrum will be gathered together at the 10th annual show on the Rockland waterfront, August 10-12, 2012. Beautiful boats, unique handcrafted products, and an eclectic mix of high-quality goods for life on the water and the shore will again be on display at Maine’s only in-the-water boat show and coastal lifestyle event.
