SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- Just like many parts of southern Maine, the parking lot of the Maine Mall was flooded Wednesday afternoon.

Shoppers returned from the stores to find their cars surrounded by shin-deep water. Others never even made it into the mall; their cars got stuck while they were driving through the parking lot.

"'Come to Maine,' they said. 'Enjoy the weather,' and here we are," Kevin O'Brien, who was on vacation from Florida, said.

He had to shed his shoes and socks and trudge through the water to reach his rental car.

"Couldn't get my wife to get the car, so I had to get it," he joked.

Laurie Romprey got stuck on a curb in the lot.

"Tried going forward and backing up, and we were just not moving," she said.

AAA had its hands full helping other drivers, so she waited in her car, surrounded by water, for more than an hour.

Finally, Ryan Whitehouse, a complete stranger, came along with his pickup truck and a rope. He pulled Romprey's car out of the water to safety.

"I would want someone to help me if I was in the same boat," he said.

Romprey thanked him and was on her way.

"Good Samaritan, he really is," she said. "I don't know what I would've done without him."

By late afternoon, the parking lot had drained almost entirely, aside from a few puddles.
