Crews break gas main in South Portland

SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- Construction crews broke a four inch gas line in South Portland Friday morning. Main Street is closed from Cash Corner to the Turnpike Spur.


Fire officials said it happened at 609 Main Street, near Dunkin Donuts, while crews were working on a water line. Police and fire responded to the incident and evacuated surrounding homes and the Maine Motel. The South Portland Fire Depart Spokesperson Robb Couture said a total of 12 buildings have been evacuated. Crews are going through the buildings to check for gas. By 9:35 a.m., Couture said the leak was mostly contained.
