Buying Vitamins Can Now Help Fight Childhood Cancer

South Portland, ME (December 8, 2010) —, Maine’s largest direct-to-consumer vitamin company, announced today it will be donating a percentage of every sale made between 12/9 and 12/15 to the Maine Children’s Cancer Program (MCCP).

Learning of MCCP’s current annual fundraising goal of $855,000, wanted to lend a hand in meeting the needs of area children with cancer and hematological disorders.

Help Good Shepherd Food-Bank “Stuff the Truck” Saturday at Maine Mall

WHAT: In response to the increase need for food this holiday season and coming winter, Good Shepherd Food-Bank is asking the public to help “Stuff the Truck” with food for the hungry on November 20 from 9 AM – 3 PM at the Maine Mall. The Food-Bank truck will be located in the parking lot at the corner of Gorham Road and Philbrook Avenue, adjacent to Hannaford supermarket.
Canned items such as vegetables, fruit, tuna, chicken, and soups are a few of the most needed items. Monetary donations are also greatly needed. For every $1 donated the Food-Bank can purchase and distribute $8 worth of food to the Greater Portland area and other communities throughout the state. 

WHY: The Food-Bank’s partner agencies are reporting significant increases in need this year.

The owners of the Salt Water Grill and Joe’s Boathouse have generously offered their support to Long Creek Youth Development Center during this holiday season.

Every year Long Creek provides the residents with the opportunity to enjoy a holiday meal with their family. This is one of the most important events of the year for the residents at Long Creek Youth Development Center.  Holiday dinners provide a critical opportunity for residents and theirs family to share a meal together and promote healthy relationships which is an essential component to successful community reintegration. 

Joe’s Boat House and Salt Water Grill are coming into the facility on Sunday, November 28th to assemble enough lasagnas to feed approximately 500 people. Five dinners will be held within the first three weeks of December.

Elder Care Centers square off in cooking competition at SMCC

WHO: 15 culinary teams representing nursing homes and assisted living facilities from around the state will showcase their talent and creativity as food service professionals in the first Long Term Care Culinary Challenge…cooking for a cause. The event is sponsored by the Maine Health Care Association (MHCA) and Sysco Food Service of Northern New England.

WHAT: Teams will consist of two cooks each and must prepare a 3-course meal using specified proteins and ingredients supplied by Sysco. Teams will have 2 hours to complete the task and will be judged on a 100-point scale by a team of certified chefs, including Sysco Executive Chef Gary Sheldon. With no dietary restrictions to contend with, this competition provides teams with an opportunity to be creative and truly showcase their talents.

Comedy Event this FRIDAY- hilarious!

Jimmy Dunn, one of Boston’s most beloved comedians, brings his humor to Portland on Friday, November 5th at 8pm at the Abromson Center on the USM Portland campus to raise funds for the Cancer Community Center of South Portland.

Southern Maine Companies Celebrate Start! Eating Healthy Day with Help From Hannaford

The American Heart Association's (AHA) Maine office is partnering with Hannaford Supermarkets to encourage employees to make healthy eating choices on Wednesday, November 3 - National Start! Eating Healthy Day.

A recent AHA study shows that 70 percent of American adults report being told by a health care professional to make a lifestyle change such as eating healthier. Start! Eating Healthy Day encourages employees to make small changes each day to incorporate healthier food choices. Through this day, the AHA’s Start! initiative will increase awareness of the importance of good nutrition; and will provide education, tools and resources to companies nationwide.

Locally, Hannaford and the AHA will be delivering baskets of heart-healthy food from local Maine suppliers - along with a special Holiday Healthy Eating Guide - to several area employers.
