Trucking for Kids Convoy

Come join us at Scarborough Downs in Scarborough, Maine, rain or shine, for a day of fun, food, and prizes! All our proceeds go to benefit Camp Sunshine, a retreat for critically ill children and their families, as well as local D.A.R.E. and Office Friendly Community Policing Programs for Children. In addition to the Convoy itself, the event will feature a Drivers Skill Competition, judging on the best looking trucks—including a kid’s choice category, face painting, live kid friendly music, a cookout, prize raffles and an auction. WinterKids appoints new Executive Director

WinterKids, the non-profit organization that helps children develop healthy lifelong habits through fun, outdoor winter activity, today announced the appointment of its new executive director, Julie D. Mulkern. Mulkern, who served as WinterKids' development director since September 2008, brings 12 years of professional non-profit experience to the organization, including resource development, program development, and staff and volunteer management in the public health sector.

"We are very pleased to welcome Julie to the executive director post," said Anna Fincke, president of the WinterKids board of directors. "Her creative vision, compassion and experience will shape and expand WinterKids in exciting ways, and guide our efforts to get more kids outside and active in winter.

Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield has once again teamed up with 17 YMCAs throughout Maine to encourage a healthier lifestyle among Maine families by serving as the lead sponsor of Healthy Kids Day in Maine.  Each spring, Healthy Kids Day draws thousands of children to YMCAs throughout Maine , where activities are held to encourage children and their families to discover fun ways to stay fit and healthy.

This Saturday, June 18th, at 2:00PM the Maine Bikram Yoga Studio located off of Dartmouth Street in Portland will be starting their Community Donation class. For a minumum CASH donation of $5 you will be able to take an amazing 90 minute full body workout and the best part? All of the monies collected from tomorrow [June 18th] thru July 31st will be donated to the Center For Grieving Children. This donation class will ONLY be on Saturday's at 2:00PM!

If you aren't sure what Bikram yoga is, let me give you a brief run down... Bikram Yoga is a system of yoga that Bikram Choudhury synthesized from traditional yoga techniques and popularized beginning in the early 1970s. The classes run exactly 90 minutes and consist of a set series of 26 postures and 2 breathing exercises.

3rd Annual Portland Sea Dogs Father's Day 5K

 

FATHER'S DAY 5K- Sunday, June 19, 2011
The Portland Sea Dogs in conjunction with the Maine Medical Partners Urology, and the Maine Track Club, will be hosting the third annual Father's Day 5k Road Race on Father's Day, Sunday, June 19th, 2011. Proceeds from the event will benefit Maine Coalition to Fight Prostate Cancer. There will also be a Kid's Run that is free of charge.

Slugger and his Dad lead the way on the flat 5K course which begins in front of the Portland Expo building, travels down Congress Street, turning down Stevens Avenue, and making a right onto Brighton Avenue back down Deering Avenue into Fitzpatrick Stadium. The race culminates inside Hadlock Field in front of the third base dugout.

The top overall male and female finishers will receive a trophy, a pair of 2011 Season Tickets for the remainder of the 2011 Sea Dogs season, and throw out the ceremonial first-pitch prior to a future Sea Dogs game.

700 Riders in Sunday's Tour de Cure

More than a few more miles toward beating diabetes through the Kennebunks Tour de Cure yesterday, with the largest field of riders to date.  More than 700 hearty and caring cyclists weren't deterred by the drizzle (and occasional out-and-out rain) as they rode for a cause that's impacts not just the person with the disease, but their family and friends too - diabetes.

Understanding Alzheimer’s Disease

Scarborough: Family caregivers and members of the general public are invited to participate in free bi-monthly classes offered by the Alzheimer’s Association. Comfort Keepers, local provider of in-home care for seniors, sponsors the training. Owner Peter Violette, LCSW, stated, Our caregivers have greatly benefited from ongoing training about Alzheimer’s Disease and other dementias. It is our pleasure to open the classes to families and other caregivers, so that they too can learn more about this challenging illness that affects so many of our family members, friends and neighbors.
