Portland Public Library to celebrate the release of WHAT'S BUGGING BAILEY BLECKER? a new book by children's author Gail Donovan
Saturday, March 12 1:00-4:00pm

Join the Portland Public Library as they celebrate the release of a new children's novel by Portland writer, Gail Donovan, WHAT'S BUGGING BAILEY BLECKER?  The event will be held in the Rines Auditorium on March 12th with a live bug zoo, bug games, goodie bags, a reading, and a book signing.

The humorous novel features fifth-grader Bailey Blecker whose classroom has been attacked by an all too common problem--head lice.  The book will be launched with a family event featuring all sorts of bugs, but fortunately no lice.  Children ages 5-12 are welcome to experience the Live Bug Zoo with naturalist, Tony Sohn at 1:30 PM and enjoy bug games, giveaways, and goodies ongoing from 1:00 - 4:00 PM.  Books will be for sale and author Gail Donovan will be on hand to autograph them.

Reindeer's High School Band Competition to Benefit Teen Agencies

Reindeer's High School Band Competition to Benefit Teen Agencies

The statewide high school rock band competition called The Off-Ramp is rounding the fourth curve and heading into the homestretch-but not before the nine competing bands learn a lesson in giving back to the community. The Off-Ramp is the brainchild of Reindeer Records, the creators of the popular Rock-Off competition that helped out thousands of young musicians since it began in 1984. The new competition is designed to provide a more intense learning experience for the young competitors and leave a long-lasting impact on their peers. Since being selected in November, the bands have had to face various music-industry tasks-songwriting, video documenting their recording studio experience, and marketing. Their fourth task is Live Event Production, for which Reindeer created three teams of three bands with the goal of producing an all-ages show to benefit designated youth groups.

Scarborough Gym Dandies celebrate 30th Anniversary performance

On March 31st and April 1st, Scarborough’s Gym Dandies will hold their 30th annual Community Performance.  The Gym Dandies is a children’s circus featuring such feats as having 80+ unicyclists perform on “giraffe” unicycles (where the seat is on a long “neck” about 6-feet off the ground), routines featuring up to 200 children simultaneously unicycling, globe walkers (who and jump rope and hoola hoop while balancing on the large balls), stilt walkers, jugglers who can juggle 3, 4 and even 5 balls, jugglers who can “share” (by having 2 people juggle as if they were one person), “steal” (where one person juggles, and without missing a beat, a teammate comes and juggles away their balls), and throw juggling pins up to 10 feet away to awaiting partners, off-road unicycling where performers ride up ramps and jump on and off boxes and other obstacles, and Scarborough’s favorite: unihockey … with all the thrills and spills of ice hockey, except played on unicycles!

STATEWIDE ORGANIZATIONS RECOGNIZE TEEN DATING VIOLENCE PREVENTION & AWARENESS MONTH

STATEWIDE ORGANIZATIONS RECOGNIZE TEEN DATING VIOLENCE PREVENTION & AWARENESS MONTH

Every year, thousands of teenagers across the State of Maine experience dating violence.  February is Teen Dating Violence Prevention and Awareness Month, a national effort to raise awareness about abuse in youth relationships and promote programs that focus on prevention. The Maine Coalition to End Domestic Violence and the Maine Coalition Against Sexual Assault are calling on Mainers to help recognize this important month, not only for youth in Maine, but for communities statewide.

Dating violence is “controlling, abusive, and aggressive behavior in a romantic relationship. It occurs in both heterosexual and same-sex relationships and can include verbal, physical, sexual, or emotional abuse, or a combination of these behaviors.”  Dating violence often starts with what may seem like minor behavior, such as teasing and name calling.
