SMCC Hosts an Open Forum on College Access with Special Assistant to the U.S. Secretary of Education, Greg Darnieder

Thursday, October 6th at noon

South Portland – Southern Maine Community College (SMCC) will welcome Greg Darnieder, Special Assistant to the U.S. Secretary of Education for College Access on Thursday, October 6th, 2011 for an open College Forum at noon on SMCC’s South Portland Campus. Darnieder will take questions from the community and speak about the importance of community colleges and key components of the President's jobs bill at the Forum.  He will also join a series of meetings with SMCC and community partners to learn more about local efforts to improve college access in Maine.

“We’re pleased to host Mr. Darnieder and eager to learn more about the administration’s plans for community colleges,” said Dr. Ronald Cantor, President of SMCC. “Student success is our highest priority and the keys to success include preparation and access.”

Community members and members of the press are welcome to attend the College Forum, which will be held at SMCC’s Jewett Hall Auditorium at noon on Thursday.

President Obama has recognized that community colleges play a key role in helping to boost the ailing US economy. The President’s proposed $447 billion jobs package includes $30 billion in funding to renovate high schools and community colleges nationwide.

Darnieder was previously responsible for establishing the Department of Postsecondary Education and Student Development and for designing and implementing an assortment of postsecondary, academic, financial, and social support programs.  These duties included enhancing the Chicago Public Schools’ (CPS) infrastructure around postsecondary education and establishing supportive services at every CPS high school.  In addition, he was responsible for building university, corporate and civic partnerships to enhance college access.  As such, he was named the director of the Department of College and Career Preparation with the CPS, a newly formed department that consists of the Department of Postsecondary Education and Student Development and the Department of Education To Careers.  In 2009, U.S. Secretary of Education, Arne Duncan, named Darnieder the Special Assistant to the Secretary for College Access at the U.S. Department of Education, where he currently serves.
