Cape Trail volunteers welcome

The Cape Elizabeth Conservation Commission has received inquiries from residents interested in volunteering for trail work events. The Conservation Commission maintains an email list of volunteers and sends emails when a trail work event is scheduled that could benefit from volunteer help. Any interested new volunteers can provide their email address using a trail volunteers link on the town website. The link can be found at:

Maine Bikram Yoga: Community Donation Classes

This Saturday, June 18th, at 2:00PM the Maine Bikram Yoga Studio located off of Dartmouth Street in Portland will be starting their Community Donation class. For a minumum CASH donation of $5 you will be able to take an amazing 90 minute full body workout and the best part? All of the monies collected from tomorrow [June 18th] thru July 31st will be donated to the Center For Grieving Children. This donation class will ONLY be on Saturday's at 2:00PM!

If you aren't sure what Bikram yoga is, let me give you a brief run down... Bikram Yoga is a system of yoga that Bikram Choudhury synthesized from traditional yoga techniques and popularized beginning in the early 1970s. The classes run exactly 90 minutes and consist of a set series of 26 postures and 2 breathing exercises.

3rd Annual Portland Sea Dogs Father's Day 5K

 

FATHER'S DAY 5K- Sunday, June 19, 2011
The Portland Sea Dogs in conjunction with the Maine Medical Partners Urology, and the Maine Track Club, will be hosting the third annual Father's Day 5k Road Race on Father's Day, Sunday, June 19th, 2011. Proceeds from the event will benefit Maine Coalition to Fight Prostate Cancer. There will also be a Kid's Run that is free of charge.

Slugger and his Dad lead the way on the flat 5K course which begins in front of the Portland Expo building, travels down Congress Street, turning down Stevens Avenue, and making a right onto Brighton Avenue back down Deering Avenue into Fitzpatrick Stadium. The race culminates inside Hadlock Field in front of the third base dugout.

The top overall male and female finishers will receive a trophy, a pair of 2011 Season Tickets for the remainder of the 2011 Sea Dogs season, and throw out the ceremonial first-pitch prior to a future Sea Dogs game.

700 Riders in Sunday's Tour de Cure

More than a few more miles toward beating diabetes through the Kennebunks Tour de Cure yesterday, with the largest field of riders to date.  More than 700 hearty and caring cyclists weren't deterred by the drizzle (and occasional out-and-out rain) as they rode for a cause that's impacts not just the person with the disease, but their family and friends too - diabetes.

Just over 10 years ago, my brother-in-law rode from Portland, Maine to Portland, Oregon in a little less than 2 months.  For my husband, this was his very first big ride100k.  He had been training the last few months, but yesterday was a big day.  In spite of some tech problems, and some sore muscles, they crossed the finish line to cheering sounds of volunteers with bells, and with smiles on their
