ROCKLAND, Maine—Passion of place is what the Maine Boats, Homes & Harbors Show is all about. The best of Maine from across the creative spectrum will be gathered together at the 10th annual show on the Rockland waterfront, August 10-12, 2012. Beautiful boats, unique handcrafted products, and an eclectic mix of high-quality goods for life on the water and the shore will again be on display at Maine’s only in-the-water boat show and coastal lifestyle event.

FREEPORT ROTARY SPONSORS 17th ANNUAL ROAD RACE

Freeport, Maine, May 15, 2012  – The Freeport Rotary Club is sponsoring its 17th Annual Close to the Coast 5K and 10K Road Races. The races will take place on Saturday, June 2, 2012 at Winslow Park in Freeport, Maine.   

The race is part of the Winslow Park Family Fun Day, a great time for families with all the events and park admission free of charge.  The events start with a Kids’ 1K Fun Run at 10 am with prizes for kids provided by Wilbur’s of Maine.  Additional, there is free admission to the Winslow Park for the day.  Hotdogs, ice cream, games, swimming, activities, playground and a moon bounce house will be available.

Your Vote Will Count – May 15, 2012

All South Portland residents are being asked to vote on the local School Budget on Tuesday, May 15, 2012, 8:30am to 8:00pm.

The city will be using the Community Center as a common voting location for all residents.

After a series of workshops and public hearings the School Budget was developed by the Board of Education and ultimately approved by the City Council. You are being asked to validate the School Budget as approved by the City Council.

The 80th Anniversary Season at the Ogunquit Playhouse kicks off with Always, Patsy Cline, on stage from May 23 through June 16. This show is told through the letters of star-struck fan Louise Seger, portrayed by Emmy Award winning actress, Sally Struthers. This popular musical, which has enjoyed great success both off-Broadway and across the nation, is based on the true story of Cline’s friendship with Seger, who befriended the star in a Texas honky-tonk in l961 and continued a correspondence with Cline until her death. Featuring the unforgettable hits of the Country Music mega-star, this funny and touching tribute celebrates the career and life of the singer who died tragically in a plane crash in 1963.

Catching the Wave of Alternative Energy - SMCC

Southern Maine Community College in South Portland partnered with a team of energy professionals to design and install an innovative ocean-based geothermal – or “sea-o-thermal” HVAC system in the Lighthouse building. The energy efficient system either absorbs or rejects heat from nearby seawater to bring a closed-loop glycol-heating coil to temperature. The system is completely environmentally friendly – releasing no byproducts into the water and requiring no fossil fuels. This innovative system makes regulating the building’s temperature easy and is three times more efficient than conventional heating and cooling systems. 

“The ocean is an amazing energy source,” says SMCC’s Dean of Admission Scott Beatty.

National Charter Schools Week – Maine has joined the movement

In 2011, Maine joined 40 other states in allowing public charter school options for families of all income levels.  On May 1, 2012, the Maine Charter School Commission issued its first application package for potential founders of these new public education options, which are free to parents and open to all children without admissions tests.

          The Maine Association for Charter Schools (MACS) will celebrate the great work accomplished by public charter schools across the country, where over 5,000 public chartered schools are serving 1.8 million students.
