Anthem Sponsors Healthy Kids Day

Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield has once again teamed up with 17 YMCAs throughout Maine to encourage a healthier lifestyle among Maine families by serving as the lead sponsor of Healthy Kids Day in Maine.  Each spring, Healthy Kids Day draws thousands of children to YMCAs throughout Maine , where activities are held to encourage children and their families to discover fun ways to stay fit and healthy. This year’s Healthy Kids Day, celebrated earlier this spring, saw 3,000 kids and their families take part in a variety of free activities.

“The Y’s Healthy Kids Day is a day designed to encourage children and their families who are not regular users of their local Y to come in, see what the Y has to offer and have a good time,” said Becky Harkema, Executive Director of the Northern York County YMCA’s. “Introducing kids and families to healthy activities can have a long term positive impact on their health and outlook on life.”

“Many kids today spend too much time in front of their computer, TV and other electronic devices and not enough time enjoying healthy physical activity,” said Dan Corcoran, president and general manager, Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield in Maine . “Reversing the rising incidence of weight issues with our children is a critical part of Maine becoming a healthier state and our state YMCA’s are a key resource to help make this happen.”

The percentage of children who are overweight has tripled in the last 25 years in the U.S. , and an estimated one-third of all Maine children are obese or at risk of becoming obese.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends that school-age children participate in moderate to vigorous activity for a minimum of 60 minutes each day.  Studies have shown that children who develop healthy exercise and eating habits while young are more likely to lead healthier lives throughout adulthood.

Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield in Maine supports a variety of initiatives across the state to help Maine children lead happy and healthy lives. 2011 is the fourth consecutive year that Anthem has funded the Healthy Kids Day at Maine YMCA’s.
