Feed Maine Food Drive - May 5th 2012

On May 5th join WCSH6 & WLBZ2 at Hannaford Supermarkets in Sanford on Main Street; Augusta on Cony Street; Auburn on Spring Street; in Scarborough in OakHill Plaza, and in Bangor by the Airport Mall , broadcasting live as we host food drives for Feed ME 2012.  All donations will go to Good Shepherd Food-Bank.

According to the USDA over 15% of Mainers, or in other words 200,000 people, are at risk of hunger.  Nearly 25% of the children here in Maine are food insecure – meaning they do not have access to nutritious food, thus preventing the opportunity to lead a healthier life.  Nearly 40% of the people served by Good Shepherd are children; and sadly the number of food insecure in Maine alone has increased by nearly 25% since 2005.

Some of the most needed foods are:

  • Canned Items: meats, vegetables & beans, and fruit
  • Instant Potatoes & Rice

Rookie Trainer Posts Breakout Day at Scarborough Downs

Rookie Trainer Posts Breakout Day at Scarborough Downs

By Mike Sweeney for Scarborough Downs

Scarborough, Maine (April 1, 2012) – In an industry often dominated by tried and true veterans, occasionally rookie talent shines through. Such was the case Sunday (April 1) at Scarborough Downs as trainer Adam Gray sent his horses to the post for the very first time.

“I’ve been in the family business for a long time,” commented Gray, “and I’ve been around horses my whole life. I decided to take that next step and try to get a stable going and start getting some wins.” Those wins came at first asking for the 38-year-old hopeful as two out of his first three starters paraded victoriously to the Scarborough Downs winner’s circle on Sunday: MIDNIGHT JAMMIN and CREDITABLE WINNER, two sons of CREDIT WINNER, both owned by Orrin Phipps of Yarmouth, Maine and driven by Ruel Goodblood, Jr.

A Triple Double for Switzer, Jr. on Opening Day at Scarborough

Scarborough – It was a picture-perfect homecoming for top driver Kevin Switzer, Jr. on opening day at Scarborough Downs as the State-of-Maine-native returned to the scene of many of his greatest triumphs, fresh off recent success at Monticello Raceway.

Young Switzer wasted little time ratcheting his performance into high gear as he claimed the first of his three victories in the opening event of the 2012 season, steering WANTSOMEOFTHIS to a gate-to-wire score, timed in 1:59.1.  The 7-year-old son of THATLLBEME is owned by Stephen Morton of Windsor, Nova Scotia, and trained by Bo Sowers.
