SMCC to Train Skilled Workers at Midcoast Campus with $100,000 Grant

BRUNSWICK- With the signing of a $100,000 workforce training grant, Southern Maine Community College (SMCC) continues to ramp up its program offerings on the Midcoast Campus in Brunswick, and will now provide training for more than 125 Maine residents in the growing field of medical device manufacturing.

Almost a year to the day after breaking ground on their Wound Care manufacturing plant at Brunswick Landing, representatives from Mölnlycke Health Care, US LLC joined Ron Cantor, President of Southern Maine Community College and Jim McGowan, Director of the Maine Quality Centers (MQC) program for the Maine Community College System, to sign a MQC workforce grant.

“Businesses are growing at the former Naval Air Station and SMCC is fueling the growth with skills that land jobs.  This is one of several grants bringing partners together to train workers and build economic momentum,” said SMCC President Ron Cantor.

The grant will fund training for as many as 127 Mölnlycke Health Care employees post hire.  Last June, Mölnlycke started construction on a $37 million facility in Brunswick.

“A major factor in our decision to invest in Brunswick was the quality and proximity of SMCC’s campus. To be competitive today, we need our workforce to be on the cutting edge, and SMCC helps get, and keep them there,” said Lisa Lutterman, Mölnlycke Human Resources Manager.

The total investment in this project is $100,000.

The first round of trainings will focus on internal systems development and improving efficiencies through management. Topics will include: ISO 13485 Internal Auditor and Problem Solving.

Southern Maine Community College empowers students to respond to a changing world and enhances economic and cultural development in Southern Maine by providing a variety of educational opportunities and partnerships.
