Childsplay in concert

The fiddle extravaganza known as Childsplay will be appearing in Portland on Saturday evening, December 4th at 8 PM at the Portland High School Auditorium. Childsplay features some of the best fiddlers in the nation, from Boston Symphony violinists to all-Ireland fiddle champions to national fiddling champions. Formed in 1986, the special sound of Childsplay lies not only in the skill of the musicians but in the warm familial timbre of the instruments they play – a quality similar to the vocal blending of singers from the same family. Known to its audience as a celebration of spirited, innovative, and exuberant music, this special evening will allow the audience a rare glimpse into the intricate weavings of the beautiful singing of Mollie O'Brien (if you listen to Prairie Home Companion you have heard Mollie sing many times!)  with the voices of the violins made by the same violinmaker.

New Cape Farm Opening Doors This Weekend

Fall and frosts have arrived, signaling the end of the season for most local farms.  For a new farm in Cape Elizabeth, however, the arrival of chilly weather means the season is just beginning.  And this year's harvest is the first for the Old Farm Christmas Place on Sawyer Road

Jay Cox began planting balsam fir on his property in 2004 after spending a few years preparing the land for the cultivation of Christmas trees.  Every year since, the Coxes have planted an average of 2,500 tiny transplants, and have meticulously cared for the trees over the past seven years.  Now there are about 1,000 trees from the fist planting that range from six to nine feet in height and are ready for sale on a choose-and-tag or choose-and-cut basis.   The farm will be in full production in 2012 as the new plantings mature; there will be around 2,500 trees available each year after this point.

Indigo Girls Next in the Benefit Concert Series

SATURDAY OCTOBER 30th 2010: Presenting the fourth in the Return to Life Concert Series, Indigo Girls, at Merrill Auditorium, Portland ME.

With three successful concerts behind us, featuring Rufus Wainwright, Brandi Carlile, & David Bromberg, we are excited to welcome these Grammy-winning singer-songwriters to the Return to Life stage.

In the beginning of 1989, with the release of what has proven to be their most timeless classic "Closer to Fine," the Indigo Girls suddenly had everyone's attention. Their first major label release snagged them a Grammy award for Best Contemporary Folk Recording, as well as a nomination for Best New Artist.
