Wright Express Donates more than $40,000 to the Arts Season Sponsors of Portland Symphony Orchestra

SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine (April 7, 2011) — Wright Express Corporation has donated a total of more than $40,000 to six arts organizations that provide southern Maine with musical and theater performances.  The organizations include the Portland Symphony Orchestra (season sponsors), the Portland Chamber Music Festival, Portland Stage (sponsored show “2 Pianos 4 Hands”), Maine State Music Theatre (sponsored show “The Whiz”), Portland Players (sponsored show “Chorus Line”) and Portland Ovations (sponsored show Nikolai Lugansky).

 “We are thrilled that Wright Express has taken such a great role in supporting not only the Portland Symphony Orchestra but the arts community as a whole,” said Lisa Dixon, Executive Director of the Portland Symphony Orchestra.  “It is this type of generosity that keeps our music and the arts alive and strong.”

Windham Center Stage Presents : Pinocchio

In this adaptation of the Carlo Collodi novel Pinocchio, the little puppet with the long wooden nose is getting into mischief again. Pinocchio comes to life on his creator Gepetto's work table. It doesn't take Gepetto long to discover this is no ordinary puppet. Geppetto yearns for a real son and, before long, the two become best friends.

Pinocchio's curiosity leads him away from his creator. He runs away from home in the pursuit of adventure. Along the way, he meets some shady characters; but with the help of the blue fairy, Pinocchio is able to learn bravery, honesty, and unselfishness. In return, she grants Geppetto his wish.

The American Culinary Federation Honors Five People With 
Cutting Edge Awards at 2011 ACF Northeast Regional Conference

St. Augustine, Fla., March 28, 2011—The American Culinary Federation, Inc. (ACF) honored five people from Maine, New Hampshire and Ohio at the 2011 ACF Northeast Regional Conference held at the Renaissance Columbus Downtown Hotel, Columbus, Ohio, March 20-23, 2011.

The Cutting Edge Award recognizes industry leaders, ACF chapters and supporting agencies for their leadership and service to the culinary profession. Anyone can nominate a candidate for this award by contacting the ACF Board of Directors. Three to five awards are presented at each ACF regional conference.

Maine premiere of “The World Beloved: A Bluegrass Mass” by renowned composer Carol Barnett

On Friday, April 1 and Saturday, April 2, 2011, vocal music students from Westbrook High School, Massabesic High School, Oxford Hills High School and South Portland High School will gather at South Portland High School to rehearse and then subsequently perform the Maine premiere of “The World Beloved: A Bluegrass Mass” by renowned composer Carol Barnett, under the direction of Dr.Robert Russell. 

The culmination of the students’ work in this year's Choral Masterworks festival will be the performance of this unique vocal piece for the first time ever in the state of Maine, complete with a bluegrass band providing accompaniment, on Saturday, April 2 in a 4pm public concert at the Auditorium at South Portland High School. 

Admission for this unique musical experience is $5 per person with a maximum admission of $15 per family.  Tickets will be available at the door. 

This show is the penultimate presentation of “March Is Music In Our Schools”
