Time travel is a tricky subject in the movies.  Go back in time and you risk changing the present and/or future, possibly even erasing your own existence.

 

That’s the problem at the core of “Loopers,” a quirky, clever and bloody thriller, written and directed by Rian Johnson, whose earlier films include “Brick” (2005) and “The Brothers Bloom” (2008).

What is it with Paul Thomas Anderson?  He’s a talented writer and director, but he can’t turn in a movie under two and a half hours long.  The result is that a terrific start can grind on into a watch-checking slog for many audience members, myself included.

 

This was true for 2007’s “There Will Be Blood” and it’s true for his latest, “The Master,” characterized early-on as Anderson’s Scientology movie, set in the early 1950s and starring three outstanding performers, Joaquin Phoenix, Philip Seymour Hoffman and Amy Adams.
